Well, the behemoth Hummer is offically being sent to inland China and the Yankees, leading the AL East, still can’t sell seats in their newly constructed mega-stadium. Yet, next time I’m in NYC there’s no way I’ll ever get a seat at the 12-seat restaurant Momofuko Ko; it’s a small world, after all.
Whether it be restaurants, food itelf, bars, travel, autos or… the trend is toward shrinkage (eeek!); the “cult of small”. Caught an article in the recent T&L which spoke on the fascination with small-mindedness titled “The Next Small Thing” by Peter Jon Lindberg who describes plates of crafted food the size of a tablespoon at O Ya in Boston; the one-room hotel chain being developed by Finland-based Hotel Room collective, aptly named Room Number One; and of course, the Smart cars now even in Houston, zipping to the 21 seat Nonna Tata for dinner.
True, it all sounds a bit silly, and for sure, elitist and snarky. But, it’s really gonna filter down. Get ready Kraft, Coca-Cola, and even you too Hardees, home of the “Thick Burger”. Times they are a changin’! This is an opportunity for many companies. Smaller portions, thoughtfully developed, can offer higher margins – small sizes can mean big opportunities, all the while developing a superior product offering – quality over quantity.
Buckmister Fuller’s prophecy of “less is more” rings true, once again.
