Planning-ness LA

It’s official! The next Planning-ness conference will be held May 17 & 18 in LA (Santa Monica, to be precise) at the Annenberg Community Beach House (to be even more precise), right on the beach off the PCH. Tickets go on sale April 9, not before, at: www.planningness.com.

As is always the case, get your tickets early. This event sells out, fast! We cap attendance at a couple of hundred, and that’s it. No more. And as usual, it’s a real deal, with individual tickets priced at a couple hundred dollars each. A steal.

Refer to the conference website for updates on speakers (we’re lining them up now) and other fun events (ditto…). If you’ve never attended Planning-ness and want to get a feel for the event, check out the website for profiles of last year’s speakers and the like. The conference is a bit ‘different,’ as you’ll have to be involved throughout. We’ve designed it in such a way that you can’t really be banging away on your phone or be otherwise disengaged. And you might actually take something away from it, too.

Planningness 2010

It’s that time of year again, time to start thinking about Planningness. W5 is once again sponsoring the planning community’s “unconference.” This year the event is taking place September 30th and October 1st in both Boulder, Colorado and Brooklyn, New York. W5 will have a contingent at both locations.

For those of you who didn’t go last year, the event is two days of talking, idea exchanging, and doing. In Boulder, the event will focus on innovation and making change happen. In Brooklyn the sessions will focus on applying new modes of thinking to the work you’re currently doing.

We’ll post more about the speakers and sessions as details emerge on the Planningness website. For now, you can go buy your tickets here.

So I’m back at my desk and finally dug out from my whirlwind week that included two great days at Planningness. I didn’t go to all of the sessions, but really enjoyed the ones I did go to, including:

Ken Eklund’s discussion of games

and the bonus session of Joe Lambert from the Center for Digital Story Telling

Planningness

So far, Planningness has been quite awesome. Two more sessions to come after lunch. The crowd has been engaged and social while the speakers have been presenting great ideas. Some of my personal highlights have included Grant McCracken’s talk on culture, the Games presentation, and Gareth Kay and Jason Oke’s discussion of connection planning (that had some great touchpoint reminders for planners in general).

Also, kudos to Mark, Claire, and the volunteers for putting together a great event.

I’ll try to write more next week, but for now here are a few pictures.

Planning-ness

We’re excited to be a part of the Planning-ness event coming up on October 16 & 17 in San Francisco. The event is the brainchild of Mark Lewis and features some pretty cool speakers, including:

Adrian Ho of Zeus Jones

Nasahn Sheppard of Smart Design
Aki Spicer of Fallon
Gary Tan, CEO of Posterous

The sessions will be a little different than the typical conference main stage and breakout rooms. Instead they’ll be set up workshop style with:

A teaching session
A hands on piece
Wrap up evaluation and discussion

W5 in the Blogs

At 2008′s The Market Research Event, the market research community was treated to a conference that entered the world of Web 2.0 and live blogging. Not to toot our own horn too much, but W5 presented and was blogged about. Apparently the blog post about our Design Driven Deliverables presentation was the top post of the year.
