<p>The system codified the color spectrum, so that a certain shade of a color can be uniformly agreed upon and unknowingly revolutionized the world of graphic design. One can think back to any decade of the past century and certain colors and hues are easily associated with each time period. Serving as more than a mere color index, the book succeeds in describing the evolution of colors&#8217; social imprint on culture, illustrated through advertisments, product design, fashion and general day-to-day life across generations.</p>
<p>Just close your eyes and visualize the 50s, 60s, 70s or 80s&#8211;it&#8217;s easy. That&#8217;s what&#8217;s so great about this book. From a historical perspective, filtered through the nuance of aesthetics, we have each period literally &#8216;colored in&#8217; for us. Beautiful and simple.</p>

<p>The world is always a bit off kilter. Nothing is exact. But my current profession as a market research guy has, in my opinion, developed a mantra that requires that the reseach I conduct for a client be &#8220;rock solid,&#8221; i.e. grounded in either well-founded objective fact (when dealing with quantitative data) or succinct insights (when delving into the qualitative realm). Regardless of the nature of the project or methodology employed, my point of view is expected to rest well within defined lines. I must be precise.</p>
<p>This current market research lens may actually cloud my findings. Rather than stuffing marketplace phenomena into a presentational bullet or pithy one-liner for my client, I often find myself wanting to &#8220;go wide&#8221; and start speaking on the non-alignment of the phenomena I&#8217;m investigating, for that&#8217;s where I believe interesting findings float.</p>
<p>A great example of this is the Italian fashion practice of <em>sprezzatura. </em>Sprezzatura is the belief that to look correct, things should always look slightly wrong. It is the act of studied effortlessness. A description of naturalness, by design. And when I think of either the natural or manufactured world in which people live and make consumer decisions, it answers a lot. My goal now is to further integrate this concept into the design and execution of the work I do, rather than drawing arbitrary lines in crafting market research. It&#8217;s the right direction to take.</p>
<p>A good starting point has been re-examining the basic tenets and overall premise of how I approach market research. Up until now, market research has, more and more, emphasized the <em>science </em>of its practice. Born of the social sciences, it continually seeks legitimization as a &#8216;true&#8217; science. Unfortunately, in my experience, to use a well-worn phrase, it&#8217;s &#8221;too fuzzy&#8221; for such rigor. Rather, I believe breakthrough research is more likely to occur if we allow the foundation of the practice to flow from the humanities, and not social science: writing, illustration, design, voice and performance.</p>
<p>So far I&#8217;ve found this premise to be powerful in the work I do. It&#8217;s decidedly different, and refreshing. Let&#8217;s face it, market research as we&#8217;ve known it for the past fifty plus years can be stale and uninspiring, regardless of how lofty our ideals. I think research should take a shot at being beautiful instead.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Better by design. It&#8217;s a simple concept, yet it seems lost on many of today&#8217;s biggest innovators. Today, consumers have a plethora of media services and  technology to choose from. You can download music from Rhapsody to your phone or laptop,  stream movies from Netflix to your PC or TV, and even upload photos taken by your mobile phone to Flickr or Facebook with that same device. But syncing service across multiple devices or something as simple as organizing your music library according to your own specific filing system can be problematic if not downright impossible. Technological advances lead us in new directions and open our minds to new possibilities but sometimes they miss the mark of customer satisfaction. This is because design isn&#8217;t always customizable.<br />
On that note, here&#8217;s a group of entrepreneurs who, I think, get the formula right. This group puts a new spin on an old standby: the journal. The principle here is to hand over the design tools to the consumer so he or she gets exactly what they need. It&#8217;s simply performance perfected. </p>

<p><em>Award-winning Typo-Animation that gives you a clear impression of the enormous amount of visual stimuli that plague us every day. Due to the immense scale of the visual bombardment, the commercial effectiveness has become utterly dubious.</em></p>
<p>What I love about this video is that it doesn&#8217;t demonize or condemn advertising and branding &#8211; it simply questions its effectiveness. All of this visual &#8220;chatter&#8221; ensures that the viewer is unable to engage in a &#8220;conversation&#8221; with any one brand.</p>

<p>The paradigm has traditionally been <strong>1) Data 2) Information 3) Knowledge </strong>and<strong> 4) Wisdom</strong>.  As data sources amass, and become more widely accessible through digital interconnectivity, does the model hold up?  Are the definitions of each of these &#8220;levels&#8221; evolving? To <a href="http://www.google.co.uk/images?q=data%20information%20knowledge%20wisdom&amp;um=1&amp;ie=UTF-8&amp;source=og&amp;sa=N&amp;hl=en&amp;tab=wi&amp;biw=1723&amp;bih=1080" target="_blank">visualize this mode</a>l for various applications, what story should we try to tell?  Do the stories below seem relevant (the story of how organization increases, or the story of how data is produced, consumed, then personalized)?  Does the model only serve as an explanatory framework, or can it be applied to strategies for learning; for communications?  It&#8217;s interesting to think about these questions, and to consider the evolution of this model, and various visual approaches to its application, over time.</p>

Different entries are sent in by logo-lovers across the nation and often describe the motivation of the companies for changing their image via their imagery. It is interesting to witness the evolution of these symbols and the connections and themes among them.<br />

Additionally, there is a slew of “symbolophiles” at the ready…and willing to share their love of all things logo on a related online forum called “<a href="http://www.iheartlogos.com/">I heart logos</a>.” On this site people submit logos into a contest judged by their peers. The best designs win a spot in the first edition of the “I heart logos” book arriving by special order December, 2010. Deadline is September 15 and the entry fee is a mere $15, so it seems worth a shot. Since ancient times we used symbols to explain how we feel, what we are doing, and who we are. Whether it is with color, shapes, or words, it seems we will keep reinventing our methods of visual communication for years to come.</p>

<p>(yeah, might need at least one of each of these&#8230;)</p>
<p>but a group of Dutch architects and engineers has started up a research project to explore the idea of creating a sustainable island nation out of the trash floating in the Pacific.  The project has been heralded &#8220;<a href="http://www.recycledisland.com" target="_blank">Recycled Island</a>,&#8221; and the goal is a livable and scalable habitation the size of Hawaii&#8217;s big island.</p>
<p>The early mock-ups bring Venice,  Dubai,  and science fiction to mind, but the project is still very much in the early R&amp;D stages and far from a reality.  People <a href="http://www.ilovedutchdesign.com/" target="_blank">love</a> Dutch <a href="http://design.nl/" target="_blank">design</a> for architecture and urban planning, not to mention their credibility in environmental solutions, so despite the distance from the potential island, this idea has sparked in the Netherlands.  And why not beckon the world&#8217;s greatest minds through online publishing and networking? The project has been spreading across magazine websites,  blogs, and press releases this week (I saw it <a href="http://www.popsci.com/science/article/2010-07/dutch-architects-want-turn-pacific-garbage-patch-green-island-paradise" target="_blank">here</a>), and the group networks through Facebook to various other sustainable design groups.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>We&#8217;ve laid off the &#8220;Infographic of the Day&#8221; posts for awhile, as so many other blogs feature similar content.  This one demanded attention though. The information itself is important and interesting, but I found the interactive functions of this home energy use tool to be so well-designed that I couldn&#8217;t pass up the chance to pass it along. This infographic works in three dimensions: question asked (there are 4 options); appliances selected and their individual data; and the running total usage at the bottom.  If only there was a way for the user to indicate when they own multiples of these products&#8230;</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The Art of Game Design is a primer for anyone interested in designing video games, but also an invaluable resource for anyone who spends a lot of time thinking about how people interact with the world around them, whether it is environments, products, advertising, or interfaces.</p>
<blockquote><p>Experiences without feedback are frustrating and confusing. At many crosswalks in the United States, pedestrians can push a button that will make the DON’T WALK sign change to a WALK sign so they can cross the street safely. But it can’t change right away, since that would cause traffic accidents. So the poor pedestrian often has to wait up to a minute to see whether pressing the button had any effect. As a result, you see all kinds of strange button-pressing behavior: some people push the button and hold it for several seconds, others push it several times in a row, just to be safe. And the whole experience is accompanied by a sense of uncertainty — pedestrians can often be seen nervously studying the lights and DON’T WALK sign to see if it is going to change, because they might not have pushed the button correctly.</p>
<p>What a delight it was to visit the United Kingdom, and find that in some areas the crosswalk buttons give immediate feedback in the form of an illuminated WAIT sign that comes on when the button has been pushed, and turns off when the WALK period has ended! The addition of some simple feedback turned an experience where a pedestrian feels frustrated into one where they can feel confident and in control.</p></blockquote>

Pentagram&#8217;s <a href="http://www.pentagram.com/en/partners/paula-scher.php">Paula Scher </a>has written this little essay that takes on the common gripes and misunderstandings about identity design, specifically, <a href="http://www.identityworks.com/forum/logo-design/what-they-dont-teach-you-about-identity-design-in-design-schools/">What They Don&#8217;t Teach You About Identity Design in Design Schools</a>.</p>
<p>For what it&#8217;s worth, this is my favorite passage&#8230;</p>
<blockquote><p><em>I never knew a designer that got hundreds of thousands of dollars to design a logo.  Mostly, designers get paid to negotiate the difficult terrain of individual egos, expectations, tastes, and aspirations of various individuals in an organization or corporation, against business needs, and constraints of the marketplace.  This is a process that can take a year or more.  Getting a large, diverse group of people to agree on a single new methodology for all of their corporate communications means the designer has to be a strategist, psychiatrist, diplomat, showman, and even a Svengali. The complicated process is worth money.  That’s what clients pay for. The process, usually a series of endless presentations and refinements, persuasions and proofs, results, hopefully, in an accepted identity design. </em></p></blockquote>
